Block of the
Month for April – The Monkey Wrench
I chose this block because
it would easily lend itself to a variety of
fabrics.
You can use some of those novelty
fabrics for soldiers or children in the center
square. You can also use floral prints or
checks. It’s really open to any kind of fabric.
The finished block size is
12 ½” (figure 1)
Cut 1 block 4 ½” for the
center square
Cut 2 blocks 5” of color 1
Cut 2 blocks 5” of color 2
Cut 1 strip 2 ½” wide for
color 1 and color 2
Sew the strips right sides
together using a ¼” seam. Then cut that strip
into 4-4 ½” strips. (Figure 2)
Take 1 5” block of color 1
and color 2 and place them right sides
together.
Draw a cutting line on the diagonal
and draw one line on either side of that ¼”
away. Sew on the seam lines and press. Cut on
the cutting line and press open (Figure 3).
Make a second set.
You now have a nine-patch.
Arrange them in the pattern (Figure 4) and sew
it together.
Press.
Now make a few more.
