This month we are going simple, but I really like the square within a square and I’m going to show you how to make it come out to be a perfect 10 ½” square.

Your finished block will be 10 ½”. When sewn in a quilt it will be a perfect 10” square. I’ve included the rotary instructions for those who always maintain a perfect ¼” seam. But if you find that hard to do, the solution is simple.

For a single block cut:

1 block 6 ½” square. This is your center square.

Cut strips from two different fabrics 2” X 44 ½” The rotary instructions call for strips that are 1 ½”, but if you cut them to 1 ¾” to 2” you can make sure your blocks will be perfect every time.

Sew your strips on the sides first and then the top. After you’ve applied the first set of borders, square up your block to a perfect 8” square. Use the markings of your ruler to center your inside block so that your borders are even.

Now add your 2nd set of borders. Sew the side pieces on first, then the top and bottom. Now square this block up to 10 ½”. Because you’ve make your strips 2” wide, you can cut it down to a perfect size block every single time.

The fun now is to design complimentary blocks or strips to complete quilt top. But if you decide to only make a few blocks, you’ll know that your blocks will be perfectly sized to work with other blocks we make. Make one, make an entire quilt top.
